Pet Care in Florida: Local Guide, Vets, Groomers & Parks

Florida pet owner's guide: year-round flea season, hurricane prep, rabies law, heat & water safety, plus featured vets, groomers, and dog parks.

Florida might be the most pet-friendly state in the country by lifestyle — dog beaches, patio dining, year-round walking weather — but that same subtropical climate creates a parasite and weather-risk profile unlike anywhere else in the U.S. Here’s how to keep pets thriving in the Sunshine State.

Pet laws Florida owners should know

Florida requires rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and ferrets by four months of age. Licensing is run at the county level (Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough and most others require an annual tag), and proof of current rabies vaccination is the prerequisite everywhere.

Florida also has a statewide “dangerous dog” statute based on behavior — not breed. Notably, since 2023 Florida prohibits breed-specific bans by local governments and public housing authorities, which formally ended Miami-Dade’s decades-old pit bull ban.

Leash rules are municipal, and beach access is a patchwork: most Florida beaches prohibit dogs except in designated dog-beach zones, and fines are enforced. Always check the specific beach before you go.

Parasites never take a season off

This is the single biggest difference between Florida and most of the country: there is no off-season for fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, or heartworm. Florida consistently ranks in the top three states for heartworm disease. What that means in practice:

  • Year-round heartworm prevention is non-negotiable — Florida vets treat lapses measured in weeks, not months.
  • Flea prevention should continue through the “winter” months; a 75°F January is a normal flea day in Orlando.
  • After any walk through grass or brush, tick checks matter — especially ears, armpits, and between toes.

Heat, water, and wildlife

Florida’s flat water is everywhere, and so are its hazards. Blue-green algae blooms in lakes and canals can be fatal to dogs within hours of exposure — never let dogs drink from or swim in water with visible algae or posted advisories. Alligators are present in virtually all fresh water statewide; keep dogs leashed near banks, especially at dawn and dusk.

Humidity makes Florida heat more dangerous than the thermometer suggests: panting works poorly in 90% humidity, so heatstroke can hit at temperatures that look moderate. Brachycephalic breeds, seniors, and overweight pets need shaded, short outings in summer — and salt water plus strong sun means rinsing dogs after every beach trip.

Hurricane season is pet-planning season

From June through November, every Florida pet needs an evacuation plan. Public shelters that accept pets require carriers and printed proof of rabies vaccination, and pet-friendly shelter space fills first. Keep records current, keep the microchip registration updated, and decide your inland destination before a storm is named.

Florida Pet Care FAQs

Is rabies vaccination required in Florida?

Yes. Florida law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets four months or older to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian, with revaccination per vaccine label. County licensing programs require proof of current rabies vaccination.

Do fleas ever go away in Florida?

No — Florida's humidity and warmth keep fleas and ticks active every month of the year. Vets across the state recommend continuous, year-round prevention; skipping winter doses is the most common cause of infestations.

What should a Florida hurricane kit include for pets?

Two weeks of food and medication, printed vaccine records (shelters require proof of rabies), a carrier per pet, current microchip registration, and a list of pet-friendly shelters or hotels inland. Most public shelters only accept pets in carriers with vaccination proof.

Are alligators really a risk to dogs in Florida?

Yes, especially at dawn and dusk near fresh water. Keep dogs leashed and several feet from the edges of ponds, canals, and lakes anywhere in the state — attacks on dogs are reported every year in all seasons.
